California Aims to Improve PAD Diagnosis and Treatment

At the request of the honorable Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, a task force met at the California State Capitol on February 4 to outline an approach to improve the early identification and treatment of peripheral arterial disease. The meeting was co-organized by the California Department of Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention and the California Podiatric Medical Association.

The state of California aims to build awareness of this under diagnosed disease and, thereby, decrease healthcare costs associated with treating P.A.D. and its co-morbidities.

Chaired by Michael R. Jaff, DO, medical director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Vascular Center, the 15-member task force will develop a roadmap that defines the burden of PAD in California, identifies existing data gaps and health disparities, and outlines a plan for state awareness, advocacy and quality improvement efforts. The task force plans to submit a manuscript for publication in the peer-reviewed medical literature to serve as a model for other states.

Vascular Disease Foundation and Inspire Launch Online Support Community

Vascular Disease Foundation and Inspire Launch Online Support Community

People with PAD and their loved ones have a new place to find support, encouragement and inspiration from others sharing experiences similar to theirs. The Vascular Disease Foundation has launched a new online community that connects families, friends and caregivers for support and information. Located at http://vdf.inspire.com , the community allows registered members to take part in moderated discussion groups and post personal blogs, enabling them to support one another through their individual journeys with various vascular diseases.  Please help us spread the word to patients with vascular diseases.

VDF is on the Move to Washington, DC

The PAD Coalition’s parent organization, the Vascular Disease Foundation, will be relocating its headquarters from Denver, CO to the Washington DC area in summer/fall 2010. This strategic move will position the organization closer to many of its member organizations, government agencies and corporate partners. The move will also allow the Foundation to take advantage of the abundant health care and nonprofit resources available in Washington, DC.

Call for Nominations: 2010 Best PAD Research Awards

To honor individual investigators and research teams whose scientific efforts have advanced PAD knowledge, the Coalition announces a call for nominations for the 2010 Best PAD Research Awards.  Nominations are due April 1, 2010.  For submission instructions, please click here.

Research papers should provide a novel insight into the mechanism of lower extremity atherosclerosis; mechanisms of progression; detection of PAD in populations; the impact of PAD on limb symptoms or quality of life; psychosocial effects of the disease; economic or health services impact; or impact of this disease on systemic rates of myocardial infarction, stroke, or amputation. Articles must have been published in peer-reviewed medical journals in 2009.  Award recipients will receive a plaque and $1,000 check to be presented at the PAD Coalition’s Annual Meeting this September in Washington, DC.
